The Winona Fire Department has cancelled its 2021 open house held during fire prevention week due to increasing COVID 19 numbers in Winona County.
The Winona Fire Department wants to remind everyone that fall is the time to make sure that your smoke and CO detectors are functioning correctly the NFPA estimates that roughly 60% of fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or the alarms are not working. Also, make a home escape plan and practice it. Only 33% of American households have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Ideally you should have two way out of every room. All windows and doors should operate correctly. Practice your home fire drill at night and teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. Have an outside meeting place (tree, mailbox) a safe distance from the home where everyone should meet. Importantly, make sure all doors are closed behind you as this can greatly slow fire spread.
