    Join us for interactive nature strolls in our beautiful Winona community.  The Winona in Nature Community Project (WINC) Strolls focus on connecting people to nature and each other, with an emphasis on wellbeing.  They are led by local mental health providers and outdoor enthusiasts.  The WINC Project, led by Winona’s Dharma River organization, is made possible by generous funding from the Winona Community Foundation and these strolls are done in partnership with the Winona Public Library the Driftless Regional Read. Monday, September 11th from 10-11:15am on the Flyway Trail Friday, October 6th from 10-11:15am at the Prairie Island Nature Trail Registration is required.

    Learn about all the resources available in the Winona Area Community during the Mental Health Resource Fair at the Winona Public Library on Saturday, October 7th from 10AM-12PM.  At 10:30AM, there will be a Behavior Modification Activity offered by Winona Health’s Kattie Tibbs, LPCC.  The activity demonstrates the challenge of making changes and the importance of vulnerability and mental health.     October 10, 4-5:45 PM For Youth Ages 9-14 Dr. Mary Skow works at the NASA headquarters in Washington D.C. She’ll talk with us about her journey to NASA and what tech is required to live on the Moon or Mars, and then we’ll build our own space colony! Per grant guidelines, this program is targeted at ages 9-14. Pre-registration is required. Meet Dr. Mary Skow! Mary has two mottos when it comes to life. Learn from Everything and Never forget to Smile. She is passionate about human space travel and scientific space research, learning about religions, cultures and languages, and helping those around her succeed in their goals and ambitions. Mary graduated from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY in 2007 with her BS is Chemical Engineering and went straight to graduate school. She graduated from Texas A&M with a PhD in Chemical Engineering with a focus in Microelectronics. During her undergraduate and graduate education, Mary continued to work full time to minimize debt. Mary started at NASA Kennedy Space Center as a graduate student Co-Op working on In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) followed by becoming a Project Manager at NASA Johnson Space Center for Environmental Control Life Support Systems (ECLSS). During the pandemic, she took a on a role as the Portfolio Analyst at NASA HQ for the Office of the Chief Financial Officer where she was responsible for understanding and working with the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate for things like the Human Landing System, Gateway and Suits. She has since transitioned to be the Strategic Evaluation Program Manager for NASA HQ under the Administrator’s suite.

  16. Brain Stuff: How to Make Friends with Your Nervous System

    On Tuesday, October 17th at 4:30pm in the Library’s Bell Art Room teens ages 13-18 are welcome to meet with the Joy Labs’ Sarah Johnson to discuss brain stuff. Our nervous system is designed to keep us alive–which sometimes is at odds with our ability to take in new information. Dr Dan Siegel developed the concept of the Window of Tolerance to help us be more aware of and effective in responding to our internal states. In this interactive session, we will learn a bit about our nervous system and how to respond when we’re out of our Window. There will also be time for art and mini-murals. Registration is required.

  21. Brain Architect Game & Film Showing of Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope

    On Thursday, October 19th from 4-6pm, play a game and watch a film at the Winona Public Library. The Brain Architect Game helps us understand what happens when the brain is built and how we can understand what makes a strong base, and what things can build it up. The game is played using cards describing various life experiences and are drawn to determine which materials are used to construct model brains. Players gain a pipe cleaner and a straw for each positive experience, while just a pipe cleaner is earned for every negative experience. Following the game, the film, Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope, will be shown. The film shows how stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death.

Actors from Theatre du Mississippi will reenact famous urban legends throughout time. This event is recommended for ages 8 and up. Some stories may be scary for young children, so caregivers are encouraged to decide what’s best for their family.
